QUICK TRICK RESPONSES TO GERBER
When a player uses Gerber during an auction in which no suit has
been bid naturally, his hand usually contains a long solid or semi-
solid suit: S-32 H-AKQ8763 D-A C-A6 or S-A8 H-KQ96542 D-653 C-4
When the first response to Gerber shows that the partnership has
all the aces, the asker (holding the above hands) wants to know how
many tricks he can run off the top. That makes a KQJx holding just
as good as three kings. A "quick trick" response to the king-asking
bid provides this information.
It goes like this: Instead of answering the repeat Gerber request
(which guarantees that the partnership holds all four aces) with
king information, show how many tricks can be run from your hand,
excluding aces. First step shows zero, second step one, and so on.
Assume that the ace of a suit will be played first, and that the
partnership has all the aces. With a doubleton KQ count just one
trick (ace played first), because partner may have a doubleton ace.
With KQx count two quick tricks; with AKQJ, three. You don't count
aces because partner has that information already.
Opener Responder
1NT 4C - Gerber
4S 5C - asking for quick tricks
Bid 5D (no quick tricks) with S-AQJ10 H-J109 D-AJ2 C-QJ10. Bid 6C
(four quick tricks) with S-KQJ2 H-AJ3 D-AK4 C-1098.
When the semi-solid suit is headed by AQ, it is better to bid the
suit prior to using Gerber (or Blackwood). Then a king-asking
system can be used to find out about the king of that suit, since
the quick trick response applies only when no suit has been bid
naturally.

magazine, December 1991.
